two soDIMM modules ?

My laptop currently has 1GB of RAM. It says in the manual for an upgrade to 2 GB I need `two soDIMM modules' does this mean I throw the 1GB away and just replace it with the 2 modules or do i combine them?

You probably only have two slots in your laptop, is the 1GB you have currently a single stick or a pair?
