I never liked phones. I don't like verbally communicating with someone if I can't see their face. That, and the awful sound quality just complicates matters.
Because of that, I can't stand cell phones. On top of the whole verbal communication thing, they make it so that I can be contacted by anyone at any point in time. As the kind of guy who prefers to initiate conversation when he chooses to, this bothers me. Also, texting is stupid. The verdict is clear, I don't have much of a use for a cell phone. I canceled my subscription as soon as I moved out and my parents stopped paying for it.
However, I've been thinking about cell phones lately. Rather, I've been thinking about how the Japanese seem to use them - to be constantly connected to the internet. How do cell phones fare in this matter? Would it be worth it to get a cheap "smartphone" of some sort, just so I could browse world4chan/channel4/other text boards on the go? I admit, the idea is intriguing, especially since I waste a lot of my time sitting around doing nothing at my job. Still, I get the feeling that this would be a costly expense.
