Can use RDC at home, but not at work.

I'm trying to get the Remote Desktop Connection to work, so that if something comes up, I can log into my computer at work, and be able to get some work done. I have successfully managed to get the two desktops in the house to contact one another, however when I try to set up a connection at my place of work, no such luck. I've put some thought into it, and my guess is that while at home, both computers use the same router, and as a result are able to connect. However, where the place I work at is a good 35 minute drive away, it is obviously on a different one. Could this be what is wrong?

The IP address is correct, plus the computer at work is set up exactly like the one at my house, so if the settings are the same. and it works here, logically it should also work down there, correct? Well, since it don't, could be that I need to supply a domain? If so how do I obtain it? I already used ipconfig, so I already got the IP address, the subnet mask, and the default gateway, but the domain doesn't appear anywhere in it. Any advice on what I could do, so as to resolve this issue?

Your home computers and work computers are on totally different internal networks--is the IP address of your work computer a 192.168, 172., or 10. address? If so then there is no quick way to connect from one to the other over the internet.

2 solutions:
1. Ask the sysadmin at work to setup port forwarding for RDP to your work machine, and get the external address you would connect to.

2. Setup a VPN or other tunnel between your home and work computers, and connect over that.

just install logmein or ultraVNC (with no-ip) on your work computer

Thanks to both of you. I was able to use logmein as a way to gain access to the machine. After that I was able to modify the router to allow port forwarding, and to allow remote access.

Also, as for the system admin, that would basically be me. The sad part? Next week would be my third straight week of doing work, and in truth, my true job should just be editing videos for channel 5. Then again this is a four man crew after all...one heck of a summer job I'll tell you that much. @_@
