Well guys, do you know of a usable text editor with a gui and support for extended character sets or encodings (e.g. Unicode, Shift-JIS). I know of mined but it doesn't work as well with a desktop work-flow as geany or gedit.

I'm a vi guy but find that emacs works better for international stuff, there are a number of GUI versions depending on what OS you run.

I was looking for an editor that could change between the several encodings for Japanese without requiring me to actually reload the file manually. I was being excessively lazy is all. medit and jedit have a "reload with encoding" option though, so I'm happy.
