XP forces boot options

Name: :D 2009-04-19 15:40

My ThinkPad wouldn't recognize new hardware, so rather than using the IBM backup partition, I formatted the drive and installed XP Pro fresh.

Now when I boot up, it asks which OS I want to load.  This makes no sense since I only have one partition and one installation of Windows.  How do I get my computer to recognize that there is only one XP installed and skip this bothersome screen?

Thanks! :D

Edit your boot.ini.

Read that. In the old days (i.e. Windows 95/98) you would use the "fdisk /mbr" command to rewrite the MBR (Master Boot Record) to Microsoft's default. In XP, you'll need to boot into the recovery console since you no longer can write to the MBR while running the OS.

Thanks, I found a way around it.  System - Advanced - Startup and Recovery.  It has a "time to display list of operating systems" which can just be set to 0.  As I understand it, this is just an UI for the Boot.ini.  I'll try sageanon's solution a little later.
