Hyperthreading

So I am running an old machine with a 3.0 GHz processor with hyperthreading.  How does this processor fair with the new "multi-core" supported programs, specifically games (duh).  Will the multi-core support help?  Will it just slow it down?  Will it have no effect?  Thanks.
