Must format SD Cards?

My laptop was working fine an hour ago, then I put it in sleep mode, went home from my class, woke it up, and: bam. Something wrong with a driver or something, and I need to put my vista disc in to repair it. So I repair it, it works. Now when I put any of my SD cards in any of the four slots for them in my computer (three USB ports with card reader, one built in card reader) it tells me I need to format them. So I tried to format one of the smaller ones with nothing important on it, and it then tells me that the format was unsuccessful. Am I missing some sort of SD Card reading driver or something?
