Subnotebooks

Name: Anonymous 2008-09-30 14:36

I'm a student on a shoestring budget but I need a laptop of some kind so I've been looking at subnotebooks (or netbooks, or whatever).

Does anyone have experience with these things? I was looking at the Asus eee PC and it looks nice, but for the same price I can get an Acer Aspire One which has a better processor and more space (though not SSD).

Should I get the thing with Linux or Windows? Is it easy (or at least manageable) to install Windows on the Linux version if I don't want to shell out for a windows license?

Asus Linux eee pc comes with DVD with, er, stuff so you can use your Windows install CD and the ASUS dvd to installwinXP onto your eee easilY USING THUMB DRIVES ETC.

The eee is a nice machine.  The linux is okay, you can switch to"advanced" mode pretty simply (KDE desktop) or you can use a different skin for IceWM with some edits, oryou can stick to clunky Asus skin.

KEYBOARD IS SMALL!

Try the MSI Wind (original). Better, overall, than Asus Eee series, if only because it's newer. Linux, if you're not a scrub, otherwise it has XP.  If you want, there's a review on laptopmag comparing the two: http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/eeepc-wind-faceoff.aspx

According to MSI, their Linux machines are returned 4x more than the XP machines because people needed something to use right off the bat and not learn something new, or they're just stupid. http://blog.laptopmag.com/msi-wind-coming-to-major-retailer-new-models-coming-soon

Also, if you were remotely tempted by the Air (you'd be a fucking dumbass) but the price was full of AIDS, Asus is making something similar for much less. http://gizmodo.com/5058853/more-info-on-the-asus-s101-the-macbook-air-that-you-can-actually-afford
