What to do with linux laptop?

Hi guys. I just installed Xubuntu on my old laptop (1.3ghz, 256mb ram, 40gb hdd). I intend to use it as a learning experience and play with setting up a home network. Problem is, I don't know what fun things I can do with it. Right now. I'm using it as a torrent leeching machine and an ftp server. I have 2 more system connected to the router, one is my sister's laptop and the other is my main PC.

Any advice? In b4 share porn with sister.

If it weren't a laptop I'd say set it up as your new router. That would include things like:

* DHCP server
* DNS server
* DSL connection
* NAT routing (iptables firewall with masquerading)
* Securing the server as much as possible
* A HTTP proxy (squid), possibly with content filtering

More fun things to try, not related to a router:

* Set up your own Windows Domain with Samba as a PDC
* If you want, use LDAP (OpenLDAP) as the backend for Samba, then you can also setup your Linux clients to use LDAP for authentication
* Set up shares, policies and logon scripts (and if you want, roaming profiles) with Samba to make your Domain really comfortable


If you do all that, you will learn a lot about Linux, Windows and networks in general. Provided you take the time to understand what you're doing.

Have a look at something like BACKTRACK which is a distro dedicated to 'audits' etc.

read Usenet groups and web forums to find problems other people are having.  Replicate those problems, then fix the problem.  This can be harder than it sounds if they've done something stupid to cause the problem.

You should try and delete your system32 folder and contents because if you are using linux you are not using the folder so deleting it will improve system performance
