Setting directory permissions

I'm trying to create a web directory which is viewable only to a select few users.  Right now I have the file permissions set to 750 (open to group and owner, closed to public) but now it seems to be impossible to access the page via a web browser, I'm only able to view it via ftp.

How do I set up a web directory and protect it with a password?
