self signed ssl certs on win2k3 iis 6.0

i've done this like ONCE before and i don't remember how i solved it that time

so far i've created the cert on unix with openssl, no problem here, done it many times for stuff like apache, cyrus, sendmail and so forth

then i click the properties of my domain, directory security, server certificate, select to use an existing one, select it from the list of imported certs, i did this earlier with the Certificates mmc

i select the port, 443, finish, i even tried stopping and starting the domain, running iisreset but i just can't get the web server to listen on 443 for https

i tried all those knowledge base articles, i haven't tried the certsrv method because someone has removed the default site and i'm not sure how to get it back pointing to all those things like certsrv

but i'm sure this is how i did it last time and it doesn't work now

i'm thinking maybe i should try requesting a new cert using iis, signing it on unix with openssl and then using it on iis but it SHOULD still listen on 443, why wont it listen on 443? god i hate wintendo sometimes, i wish you could just see some command line output or a regular ass logfile not that cryptic event logger nonsense

when you get into the corporate world of professional systems administration you will eventually discover that a lot of people use windows as a server and that that money doesn't discriminate

i just wish i had a real ms education, or any other education for that matter, because i suck at and i HATE windows
