Will OpenGL ever be able to compete with the likes of DirectX 10? I would like to see less games rely on DirectX, but progress in the open community seems lacking.

OpenGL is and has always been superior to Direct3D, you can do everything with OpenGL that you can do with Direct3D.

directx is just a wrapper around opengl.

Then all the new games shouldn't require DX10 with DX10 video cards

They don't. It's just that they are paid by the big manufacturers/Microsoft to say that.

OpenGL is already able to compete with DirectX 10 simply because DX10 is Vista-only. Whether it can compete with DX9, though...

No. OpenGL can only compete with Direct3D 10, not DirectX 10.

OpenGL also has 2D libraries, so it's really like Direct3D + DirectDraw.

These "librarys" are only a few functions (glDrawPixels, glBitmap, etc.). OpenGL is (mostly(not in MESA e.g.)) implemented in the gfx-driver, so there are no librarys.

The only reason people use DirectX at ALL is because MS pours their fortune into paying developers to use it to hold onto their monopoly.
OpenGL + SDL is easier to learn, easier to use, gets features long before DX (all of Direct3D 10's features were in OpenGL *years* ago), performs way better (DX10 would've been ~1.5x-2x faster than DX9, but it's hindered by so much DRM bullshit (EVERYTHING is fucking encrypted, for example) that it performs 10-30% slower), etc, etc, etc.

DX has nothing to do with DRM, does it? I think DX and OGL both are slower on Vista because all drivers (even the gfx-drivers) run in user- instead of kernel-(as in XP)mode.

Oh, no, DirectX does indeed have it's own DRM subsystem. I don't remember the details, but DX10 doesn't even allow DMA and is CONSTANTLY revalidating every connection. There are so many restrictions in the DX10 API that nearly half of your processing time is spent working on DRM bullshit or idling waiting on DRM bullshit instead of getting shit done.

Good thing that DirectX is mostly for games then. That way I don't give half a shit.

You don't care that you're getting half the framerate you would be getting without the DRM?
