Ever since I flashed my router fw to tomato I can no longer release/renew to get a new IP.
Where do you guys get your 7 layers of protection from?

I don't know what the fuck you're talking about.
If you want 7+ layers of protection, set up seperate servers as firewall, router, http proxy (with malware scanner), mail server (with malware scanner), arpwatch, nagios, IDS (snort/AIDE), honeypot, firewalls on all the clients. Of course that includes disabling unneeded services.
