registry editor trouble

my laptop recently got a nasty worm. i got rid of it, but it modified some of my registry entries. it keeps preventing my registry editor and task manager from opening up, and it keeps looking for a file the worm planted somewhere. i'm trying to open the registry editor to fix it, but it won't open. what can you guys suggest?

oh yeah and googled it already, found some Norton tool that apparently didn't work.

If your system got compromised, the only real option is to reinstall. You described the reasons yourself. You never know what kind of shit the malware might have left behind. Save your human readable files (documents, images, music, videos) to another partition, format the system partition and reinstall. Do not reuse install files or drivers you have on your hard drive. Redownload everything. You can't know what might be infected with some shit.
