Advice for building a new computer

Name: Anonymous 2008-01-02 16:47

Hi everyone, I already have a list of components that a friend made for me. Could I get a list of all the things that I need to buy? I haven't ever made my own computer so I am not completely familiar with all the terminology, but I have been researching into all the new desktop gadgets.

My friend suggested I used newegg, but I found the same parts at Fry's for similar prices and the advantage of no shipping because I can just walk in and buy it.

Can you give me some advice about computer stores and things I should take into account?

I'm also not sure what kind of budget I should have for a standard gaming PC that will last me several years. I was thinking between 1,200-2,000 dollars.

I think I have come up with a good list of the necessary components. (Keep in mind I'm new at this so I don't understand all the components that make up a computer).

1. Monitor ;
2. Motherboard;
3. CPU (Microprocessor);
4. Primary storage (RAM);
5. Expansion cards;
a) Video Card
b) Sound Card
c) Network Card with WiFi
6. Power supply;
7. Optical disc drive;
8. Secondary storage (Hard disk);
9. Keyboard;
10. Mouse
11. Case
12. Speakers
13. Other peripherals

My friend suggested the following:

1. Samsung 22'' LCD Widescreen
2. Asus P5N32-E SLI LGA Nvidia nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel
3. Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 2.66 GHz
4. Corsair 2x1 GB Dual Channel Kit
5. Expansion Cards:
a) BFG Tech Geforce 8800GTS 640MB PCI/SLI
b) ??
c) ??
6. Coolmax CUG-600B ATX 600W
7. Lite-on 20x CD/DVD burner
8. Seagate 750GB
9. Logitech G15
10. Logitech VX Revolution
11. Raidmax Smilodon
12. ??
13. ??

Just the parts he suggested is +2,000 dollars so I am thinking that there are a lot of parts that are more expensive than I require for a decent computer. Could someone explain some of the terminology? I know I need a motherboard that has the compatible slots and that putting the computer is as easy as putting the cards into the parts that fit I think. What's with the PCI, SLI, LGA, ATX, and 680i? I think that they all stand for card slots,     except for the 680i I can't figure out what that is supposed to mean.

Sorry for the long post. If this is a bad place to ask for computer advice could someone please redirect me to somewhere that wouldn't mind helping me? Thanks in advance and please no trolling. I won't respond to it and it's just a waste of everyone's time.

If you do buy a complete system, don't get a Dell. You can get similar performance and at least similar quality (probably besser) for a better price from a number of other companies.

If you want to build a computer yourself and have next to zero experience with it, why not take a knowledgable friend with you. Tell him what you expect, search for hardware together, have him explain why he would choose this over that, ask questions. As thanks, invite him to dinner/drink. That way you gain experience without risking too much.
