So, I'm going to college, and I need a laptop. My parents say get the best laptop you can buy. I say get a shitty laptop that can do word processing, and has a wireless card, then use the rest of the money on a desktop. If I did this would my desktop be better than their laptop?

  Dell Vostro 1400
  Intel Core 2 Duo 1.4ghz
  14.1" non-glossy Widescreen display
  2GB DDR RAM
  128MB GeForce 8400M GS
  120GB 5400RPM Harddrive
  Windows Vista Home Premium
  8x CD/DVD Burner
  Integrated Wireless & Bluetooth
  85WHr 9-Cell Battery
  2 Year on-site service/warranty
  $815.07 total

i ordered this today. unless you want to play UT3 at MAXIMUM EVERYTHING, this will be good enough for a laptop and desktop.

otherwise id recommend looking for a refurbished lenovo thinkpad t40/t41.. cheap, light, solid battery life.

Op here
I need video rendering capability cause I'm planning to major in video design, so 1.4 and 2GB ram won't cut it. I need something with lots more power

You need quad core CPU with at least 8 gig of RAM and dual nvidia 8800s to handle that amount of emailing and interweb browsing
