Everyone tends to hate gnome because it looks like a piece of shit and uses the most resources. KDE is more user-friendly. Xfce is the lightest on resources, but harder to use. Personally, I would use KDE and blackbox. KDE = easy to use. Blackbox = lightweight.
Anyways, you really should try them all for your self. Some people are niggers who prefer gnome.
