scanning software?

I have a bunch of typed documents that I have hard copies of, and I need them in soft form.  Unfortunately, the soft copy (and the one backup that I made on a DVD) have been lost.  I really have quite a bit of material, and it's work related (must be retyped).    Is there any kind of software that can take scanned images of text and give me a dump of the text?  Don't care if it's freeware or commercial, I'm not going to pay for it either way.
