Ok everyone, I'm thinking of switching to linux because I've heard great things about it, so I was wondering which linux based os I should go for. I'm just looking for one that I can use the internet on, since I have my games on another installation of xp. Basically I want to run live messenger, utorrent and limewire or something similar. Also will I need to get any virus protection, since I download some risky stuff.
You can now get Steam games to run with WINE on Ubuntu. You shouldn't be having trouble with SC. If you are, you fail, and you need a better computer.
This brings up another question. Why would you want to run your games on Linux, if you already have a gaming capable XP machine? The only advantage in gaming that Linux has over Windows is that it's great for running servers. Sure, put together a Linux machine, and enjoy it, but keep your games on Windows.

Stability. Games are often the buggiest applications on a given computer, and being able to just kill the Wine process when they crash is much more convenient than having to reboot entirely, since Windows often can't recover from a crashing application by itself.

Ubuntu is a great OS, fast sleek and it does everything good.
It does games pretty well too, though. I've been able to run all of my games under Wine, and there are a fair number of Linux-native games out there as well.
