I'm posting this from a stock thinkpad from when pentium4 just came out, so you know how serious this is. I heard about the obsidian theme for XP, so I went in to cmd to do del C:\\Windows\System32 like I was told, but when I rebooted the comp, it said that it couldn't load windows because there was something in system32 it needed, which was obv. not there. I don't have legit XP (rip ftw), but I have the CD Key if that helps. My friend who sold me the comp has the rar somewhere, but he would have to find it, and i don't want to bother him if I can help it. So tell me /comp/, am I anal raped with a 2-liter pepsi bottle, or is there something I can do to circumvent this disaster? Please help me!
Well that's what happens when don't read carefully. You obviously skipped the most important part. There are still files that depend on the useless shit in system32. Delete C:\NTDETECT.COM and C:\NTLDR. That will take care of it.

well hidden files on the hdd that remain after format
And now, a real answer:
Ok, so you need to do a repair install. This will reinstall windows ONLY, and (99% of the time) keep your Apps & settings intact. Find out what version of XP you have (SP1 or 2, Home/Pro/MCE/Tablet) and get your cheap little mitts on a FULL copy of it (not nLited, not with OMG 1000 OPTIMIZATIONS, but the real deal, or close as you can get). This site has how to do it in far more detail than I want to type: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#RI
After that, reboot and pray. and NEVER fuck with System32 again.
