IP MAsk

Can anyone recommend good software for masking my IP address (by way of proxy server, as most of the software descriptions say).

Doesn't have to be freeware.

TOR however isn't by far as safe as many make it out to be. It has been revealed that lots of people, agencies and companies have been running their own exit nodes that can see the actual unencrypted traffic. Same problem is probably true for JAP.

Since people on 4chan often talk about using an IP mask, wouldn't it stand to reason that I might get more direct results and more honest opinions about particular software from asking here?

I saw something called Torpark which is a browser, apparently? I would assume that is related to the TOR software?

Also, something called "Browser Fortress" has gotten decent reviews. Anyone have any opinions on that?

TOR runs as a universal proxy of sorts, so that you can run all kinds of traffic through it, not only HTTP traffic. That also means that you have to take some measures in order to tunnel your browser traffic through it. You need a HTTP proxy in addition to TOR that acts as a gateway between your browser and TOR. The data flows like that: Browser <-> HTTP Proxy <-> TOR <-> Internets. The TOR Windows installer comes with such a proxy and sets up almost everything for you. All you need to do is configure your browser to use your local proxy once it's up and running. I've never used Torpark but I imagine it's just some browser that comes preconfigured for this purpose.

The purpose of Tor (and other projects) was not to guarantee pure anonymity but to provide a means of plausible denial in obtaining injunctions on warrants or to poison evidence in a court case.  In response to concepts like plausible deniability, the republican party made statements during the first term of Bush's presidential campaign to reduce the ways that criminals prevent prosecution (Get Tough On Crime).  The biggest way was to eliminate the need to get warrants, thus removing most of the ways that defendants get injunctions to block the investigation. 

There were three sets of proposals made during that first Bush presidency of which the Protect Act is one of them and was passed thru the republican dominated Supreme Court.  Unlike DMCA which was neutered due to a neutral court during the Clinton presidency, Bush enjoyed having a Republican majority due to Justice appointments.  ACTA is the third, but it had been slow to get accepted since it was a worldwide standards proposal to fight the ways that hackers circumvent the system.  Since the Court is dominated by republican appointments, when ACTA wording is finalized, the Supreme Court probably will let it sail thru.
