Nvdia MSI Geforce 8600 GTS, overheating?

Okay, so I've had this computer for a week or so, caused no problems. Now when I hooked up another monitor it locked up on me when playing Silent Hill and Half-Life 2. What happens is horizantal lines appear on the screen, then the colors in random areas of the monitor go into what look like colors or 16 colors (colors, not bits). So did hooking up another monitor put too much strain on my video card causing it to overheat? Or is it because I'm using a Direct X 10 card on a XP PC.
The recommended temp for the card would also be nice. Thanks.
