fucking modems

hey guys im not exactly that smart on these subjects so basicly if u can help plz reply in idiot language, eg: this maked it so that doesent be gay,

well my problem is, i have broadband, and the modem they gave me, now WHY THE FUCK is my max dl speed 26kb a sec? i also have a d-link router and if i run from that it boosts my dl speed to 30.1kb a sec... wtf?
