AM2 or AM2+

I'm about to upgrade (Athlon 2800+ just doesn't cut it anymore, not to mention my inability to get a new Graphics Card).

I'm wondering if I should go for a Motherboard with AM2 and DDR2 RAM, or AM2+ and DDR3 RAM.

If I go the cheap way, I can afford it come october hopefully, if I go the whole way, I won't have enough money until January.

I'm planning on not upgrading for a while, the computer I'm using now is like five or six years old.

Socket AM3 is the way to go as it will be fully compatable to take advantage of DDR3 RAM

Well, if you're even considering an Agena FX it sounds like you have no problem with spending a lot of money on your build.  In that case, wait for DDR3-compatible AM2+ and 1207+ motherboards and compare AMD to Intel then (not now - wait for real-world tests).  You've waited this long, no need to rush when a new generation is coming so soon.  The wait for AM3 would be longer, of coursse.

Recommendation would have been different if you didn't want to wait and wanted to save money (AM2/DDR2 or 775/DDR2).  It also would have depended on whether you wanted to overclock (775) or not (AM2).

The only non-obvious downside to waiting is cost-related.  High-quality DDR2 sticks aren't going to be this cheap forever, and comparable DDR3 isn't going to go down in price to the same degree for at least 1-2 years.  But again it doesn't sound like a problem for you.
