OpenSource OS's that Don't Suck?

Do they exist?

I liked Windows XP and Vista is a horriffic pile of fail but I don't have an actual XP CD. I don't really know anything about open source OS so I don't have a clue where to start.

Bonus if you can actually run programs on them instead of just have a machine sitting there you can't run applications on because it sucks. If I want that i'll use Vista.

If you don't know anything about open source OSs, then I wouldn't recommend one. I was in the same situation as you, and I decided to create a dual boot XP/Ubuntu. Everything was pretty cool until I had to install my video drivers. It's a horrible process so I just went back to XP and haven't used my Ubuntu partition since.

Yeah, because you're totally going to find quality software on windows.  No seriously, I can tell all you've used is Gnome (probably off of an ubuntu livecd) and that you didn't bother to actually learn anything about it.

Firefox, Opera, Openoffice, K3B, UT3, Amarok, Enemy Territory, Maya, GIMP, Konqueror, ZSNES, Blender, KPDF, Mplayer, Audacious, Audacity...I could go on, but the point is there's a shitton of excellent software that runs in Linux.

Ubuntu's community is shit.  That's the only conclusion I can draw considering how many of their spawn have been showing up in #gentoo for some reason.  Also, try learning to read.  If you follow the directions given by your distro provider or wiki, it's a relatively painless process.

If Microsoft imploded tomorrow, we'd still get by.  After all, we have Linux, and any company can take the code and sell copies all it wants.  Redhat does it.  It's possible.

A rock solid OS belongs to the people, not to some corporation.  The world is assuredly waking up to that fact.  The more Microsoft fights it, the more they have to adopt Open standards ... which fulfills most of the goals anyway.

God dammit i get sick of these OS 1 suxors & OS 2 rawks threads.

Linux is a pain in the ass to fine tune to what you want but it can be completely customized for any job. Also, it is reliable as hell. My work computer runs linux and the only time it stops or restarts is when the power goes down. (Running Vector btw). However, if you want to play ANY games that dont suck then you'll have to go with windows. That is unless you still DeathMatch in doom and quake.

Init is shit because it doesn't asynchronously load daemons.
X11 is slow from its network based client/server architecture, featureless by design, lacks ergonomic enhancements because it leaves too much to the window managers which lack standardization, therefore standard features never make it into the window managers, and bloated because it uses a stack of memory and a fuck ton of libraries to achieve very little.  Additionally there is gnome and kde which are also too damn big, because X does fuck all.
LKMs are Loadable Kernel Modules...

Look, here is the situation, with the OS's everywhere, they all suck, firstly we all know why OSX and Windows suck but let's look at the Linux and other open sources... They are NOT COMPATIBLE WITH ANYTHING, any game, program, driver, you name it, that hasn't been moded for Linux or others gets no real costumers. Here is how you make every other OS fail: Either someone needs to hack the dominant OS, OS 10 and Windows, and make them open source or just be content to suck OS dick...
