Do I need a new router for peer-to-peer?

Whenever I'm using a torrent I usually have problems with getting a high download rate regardless of the amount of seeds avaliable. I was therefore thinking that maybe it was the router that was causing all of the problems, and was wondering if getting a better one might fix the problem. The type of router I have now is a Speedstream 6520. Also I tend to use BitComet, and my half open limit is set to 50.

I have already been to Newegg, so I have seen several of the different types of routers avaliable, the only problem is, I can't really make heads or tails out of which is the better one to get. If anyone has any advice on this matter please let me know.

Your router sounds like a modem/router combo. Do you use DSL? I recently switched to DSL, and while it's faster than the cable service I used to have, I get a lot of dropped connections and just shit that didn't used to happen when I had cable. Just something to consider before ruling out that your router is causing the problem. Anyway, I recommend this router -

There shouldn't be a need to flash this router with Tomato or DD-WRT since the stock firmware works well enough, but you can always do so if you decide.

As I mentioned earlier, my router is a Speedstream 6520, so no, it's just a plain old router. :P Yes, I do use DSL, unfortunatly while I can download 130 KB/sec I can only upload 20 KB/sec. This is due more to the DSL service than the router though. Also, as you mentioned, something like that happens. The download rate of a torrent goes up and down a lot. It's fairly annoying; I just wish it could utilize as many seeds as it posible could.

You can fix this situation quickly by accessing your admin panel.

check out www.portforward.com to find out how to do this...

then just 'enable' DMZ

that will fix ur problems quick ;P

You need a brain. Router comes last in your situation.

Has it occured to you that just maybe I haven't had that much experience with routers in order to know stuff like that?
