What would be the safest, fastest internet my computer is capable of? I currently have AOL 9.0 dial-up and it's slower than shit. Plus the computer is pretty slow when it comes to starting up and shutting down. (Windows XP)

Do you have any other computers in the house?
If so then hook it up to AOL and install a light weight linux distro on your computer and network them(as in sharing the connection). I dont think any linux distro supports AOL and if it did your modem would probably not work. Light distos are good because they are fast and have only internet basics that you need. Web browser, e-mail client, chat clients, etc.

puppy is what seems to work best for me(using it right now on a laptop with about the same specs and it screams)

That is the only thing i can think of besides reinstalling windows for a fresh start and then some serious fine tuning to get you system at the best speed.

OP, adding more RAM at that level should make a noticeable difference.  I'm sure you could pickup a 128 or 256 stick of RAM fairly cheaply ($20?).  If you're not sure, turn off the computer, open it up, obtain one of those anti-static bags, ground yourself to the case (just stay near it and touch the metal case a lot, while doing this), then remove the stick or sticks of RAM.  Note how many RAM slots you have, also.  Once the RAM is safely inside the anti-static bag, take it to your local computer shop and obtain their opinion on upgrading the RAM.

I don't know what you have for a motherboard, but simply obtaining a 256MB memory module should do it for most instances, but you might pursue some combination.  The computer store will be interested in selling you as much RAM as possible, so be on your guard for being oversold.  You want to get to at least 256MB of RAM, but 512MB is really pushing it, and anything over that is probably pure waste.  Note well that you might be able to put in another stick of 128MB RAM and then test that out; if the machine seems to be quite a bit faster, then there's no need to get more; if not, then it's back to the computer store.  (Just don't overbuy.)

You could help us here by opening the computer and then telling us how many memory slots you have, and what's in each.  Hopefully your RAM modules have descriptive labels; write down everything you see on a label (but not what's written or embossed directly on the chips).  If you can, try to identify what type of RAM you have; there are websites which can help you ID them (DDR, etc.).

Get a hold of some windows 2000

Not as secure as xp, but not the gaping hole that windows 98 is.

The laptop that I was talking about in >>8 had windows 2000 previously on it with about the same specs. I hear it's the retarded member of the windows family, but it will give you better performance and AOL should work on it no problem.

For that money, #12, you might as well get one of the gazillion Dell Optiplex GX-series computers that are being dumped on the secondhand market from all the upgrading going on.  One of them is apt to be running W2K, even XP (since even the GX100 can run XP just fine with 256MB RAM and a 6GB drive).

Hell, I picked up an Apple iMac G3 running OS9.2 just the other day for less than $100.  Some friend of mine just wants a small computer in the kitchen for accessing the Internet via the house DSL, and for the money, that iMac will do the trick!

I googled "Compaq Presario 4400US motherboard" and arrived at:

This tells me you have 2 memory slots, which at this moment is filled with either 1 empty and 1 module of 128MB PC133 SDRAM DIMM, OR they are filled with 2 of the 64MB modules.  You still need to open the case and see which is true, but largely you're in good shape for upgrading.

If you have the 2 of the 64MB modules, you'll need to pull at least one of those, since you'd be replacing one with a 128MB module at the minimum.  This is not as effective for the money, since you want to get to at least 256MB ... but it will be your cheapest option.  If you have the 1 of 128MB module only, then it'll still work and will get you 256 total.

A 256MB module should be fairly cheap.  The link provided offers one for $32.95.  So, if you can spare a memory slot, adding one of those would about triple your memory (128+256=384, or 64+256=320).  You should be able to mix them.  Out of convention, place the larger module in the slot marked 0 or 1 (such as "DIMM0"), on the off chance that the memory-access circuitry is slightly biased towards the 1st one.

When buying, it's best to bring in a sample module, but you already know you need to buy a "PC133 SDRAM DIMM".  Any computer store clerk will know what that is.

Needless to say, be careful handling the modules since static can harm them, and of course don't physically mess around with memory modules with power on.  (You can leave the unit plugged into the wall power, as long as the computer is OFF.)

Running XP SP2 on a PII with 128MB RAM is really pushing the "envelope of slow".  A stick of RAM is so cheap and quick to upgrade that it's the best option for an old computer.
