i seem to be having trouble with my usb devices, whenever i plug in a flash drive it shows:
Generic volume
Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)
does anyone know what happen?
or a source to download the generic volume driver as it says my drivers build is from 2001 which i suspect may be the problem
Generally a flashdrive should work with XP by default. Check the box or website to see if drivers are needed.
Something might be niggered with your USB ports. Particularly, some previous device (like a USB-powered masturbation tool) might have left a driver loaded and also allocating USB resources.
Is your XP upgraded to SP2? You may be stuck with unpatched XP.
I can only assume you have no other USB problems?

i found out the problem
it was a generic volume driver installed by paragon partition manager that was conflicting with the original windows one.
i only noticed this when i was going between computers comparing the driver settings.
once i uninstalled the program and rebooted usb started working again
Interesting. My 2nd suggestion (leftover driver still loaded) was correct but I doubt I would have suspected what you found. Good work, and thank you; I learned something.
