Best partitionning program?

Name: Anonymous 2007-07-14 14:13 ID:SaLYuKwv

See title.

Only know of PartitionMagic so far, but wondering if there is better.

First priority is something that allows me to resize and move partitions without deleting their contents (much like PM does)

Second priority is something that is able to, at least, handle Vista partitions (PM ceases to work the moment you have a Vista partition)

wtf? are you using bit encryption or something?

I read it off the Wiki article:

"It fails to run under Windows Vista. When launched, with a Windows Vista partition present, even from another version of Windows, Partition Magic displays the following error: "Init failed: Error 117. Partition's drive letter cannot be identified.""

I don't know the details of it, having no Vista installed (yet!) but if a workaround does exist, then that's good too.

Well, it appears that the built-in disk manager for Vista can extend and shrink volumes while keeping the file system intact.
To get to it, right click - properties on 'my computer', manage, disk manager. Not quite as convenient as PM is, but it works.
Then again you did say that you don't have vista installed, so either bring it to someone who does, or keep looking for a program.

Oh, I didn't know Vista could play around with partitions like that.  That's good to know.

That means I could install Vista on one of my already prepared partitions, then fix the partitionning as I see fit, and I should be good to go.

To put in context: I installed on a 160 GB disk but XP Pro installer can't see past 137 GB, so it cut off my extended partition before the true end of the disk.  Got to fix that.

Shit, I can't remember the exact name of the one I used, but Acronis comes to mind, and I'm too lazy to Google.

It works with Vista, that I know.

OP here.

Turned out PartitionMagic was much more powerful and easier to use than I last remembered.  I managed to fix my partitions the way I wanted in a jiffy.

I'll give Acronis a check though.  If it works with Vista, then I'd rather use that just to be on the safe side.
