What's the best way to protect your computer and still be able to use it? I'm looking for anti-virus software, firewalls, anti-spyware/adware/malware and all that jazz.
Currently i've got PC Cilin Trend Micro doing all that but it's a bit of a memory hogger: firefox eats up all the cpu just opening a webpage because trend is checking everything, and i've tried disabling most of the "extra" options, but still no go.
So, give me your suggestions, be it suites or separate programs, free or not (i'm willing to cash in a few bucks to get this right once and for all)

nod32 (not free but light on resources) and windows xp firewall (just a basic firewall but it's light on resources; good enough as long as you don't do anything stupid)

I have NOD 32 (cracked), and a router - best type of firewall: hardware. But in terms of software, I use Zone Alarm Pro (also cracked).

Common sense + not using Internet Explorer + not being an idiot
When I need to, I run AVG over executable downloaded content from untrusted sources (e.g. piracy), but I don't keep it resident.

AVG
Firefox
External router/firewall (Seriously, who doesn't have one of these? Anyone who exposes their computer to a public IP is asking for trouble)
IE is for running windows update manually. Maybe. IE is not for surfing the net, unless you like getting virii.
Folow theses rules and you can't go wrong.

Comodo is way better than Zone Alarm if you want to monitor or firewall outbound connections (i.e., block Microsoft). Use in conjunction with external router/firewall (linux firewall is best - BSD fags gb2/macfag$5000 please) is best

Get a hardware NAT box (e.g. what is commonly sold as SOHO routers) to filter any direct attacks to vulnerable windows services; use your brain to circumvent doing anything stupid; use alternative browsers (I recommend seamonkey as it's not such a pain in the ass to configure like Firefox is--basically, if you can't find an option in Firefox's puny options dialogue, you have to edit configuration files BY HAND; Seamonkey's preferences dialogue may be bloated as hell, but at least it features each and every option a sane person would want to configure, thus relegating the need to ever edit configuration files by hand).
An anti-virus solution might be a good idea; there are quite some nice free programs like Avira AntiVir PE that do the job just fine.
I do not recommend using personal firewalls, as they clog up the system, waste ressources, offer you a sensation of false security and are ultimately useless if you don't know exactly what you are blocking or allowing to happen, which you usually don't when using personal firewalls. Furthermore, they cripple basic networking functions, oftentimes leading to connectivity problems when trying to access the computer from other computers in the local network, which is something you would quite like to do occasionally.

Any of firefox's options that arent in the main dialog boxes probably don't need to be adjusted, or should only be tweaked by people actively developing.
At best, you might get a slight performance increase, at worst you'll abuse webserver resourses and break browsing alltogether.

I disagree with that. Seamonkey's vast preferences dialogue features an array of nice and interesting things which can greatly improve web surfing. As an example, Seamonkey's preferences dialogue enables me to configure what should appear in the address bar when I'm entering a web address; in Firefox, this defaults to showing all matching addresses I've visited so far--this might be elegant, but it's not comfortable, as the browser keeps showing subdirectories of a domain I browsed ages ago when all I want is to visit the domain's top directory. There is an option to only use addresses that have been previously entered into the address bar by yourself for the address auto-completion, which leads to exactly the result I want. It's also possible to configure this with Firefox, but only if you want to add (!) several lines to some obscure configuration files.
Firefox might be a nice fire-and-forget browser, which, to be honest, is what most people want, but Seamonkey's preferences dialogue is just so much more practical and sensible compared to Firefox's.

Yeah, like pipelining (retardedly disabled by default) or opening tabs for middle clicks, right?
At best, you might get a slight performance increase, at worst you'll abuse webserver resourses and break browsing alltogether.
Pipelining is much easier for web servers and network infrastructure, and faster. And about 99.999...0% (yes one of these /sci numbers) of web servers support it. Yet the Firefox devs are retarded on this.
Additionally you should be certain with regards to the option of the fabric.
