Check that memory and processor are correctly installed. Check that everything's properly plugged. Unplug all drives (IDE, SATA, floppies) and all cards and try again. Then plug shit one by one and see what breaks it.

the cpu and ram are plugged into the mobo, right?

double check which pins are the atx power switch and be sure they are the right ones

also, are you sure you have the right type of ram?

yep ram and cpu are in. this isn't a newly built machine. it was working a few days ago so im sure everything is correct. the wires with cap labeled POWER SW is connected to the 2 pins labeled POWER SW on the motherboard. is there a way to test the PSU without plugging into another board(which i don't have)?

Nothing happens, or you don't notice anything happening? If NOTHING really happens, well then, maybe you should make sure your PSU and mobo are properly connected, then make sure both are not defective, shouldn't you?

brilliant deduction. thats what im trying to do.

NOTHING happens. i would say the power supply is fucked BUT the southbridge light comes on when the psu switch is on so its not COMPLETELY fucked. the motherboard, once again, the southbridge light comes on so its not COMPLETELY fucked. so i have no idea which one. DURR HURR the 20 pin cable plugs into the only 20 hole connector and the 4 pin cable goes into the only 4 hole connector. i just ordered a new board so i will figure out which one is defective.
