P2 laptop video issues

Name: Anonymous 2007-05-30 17:06 ID:3SpNSX+g

My little brother has an old laptop that he likes to play SC, RA2 and other old RTS games on. Its a Dell Latitude, though i don't know the exact number because we got it for free with all branding stripped off. It has a P2, 256mb ram, and an ATI RAGE MOBILITY-M1 AGP2x.

I had to wipe it clean and reinstall windows...Windows98SE, since it can't run XP. Since i didn't have the reformat disks, i had to manually download ALL (ugh) drivers online. I got it running fine, even the wireless PCMCIA card works.

However, when playing games in "fullscreen" mode (Half Life, StarCraft, Red Alert 2, and others), the game is rendered in its default resolution, and a black border surrounds the unused screen space.

From what i can tell, the video drivers are not stretching the games. However, the video drivers are installed and running fine, since they can actually run and play the games fine, they're just not stretching. The desktop/windows runs fullscreen just fine...perhaps the games are not referencing the correct drivers???

What should i do? I've tried editting the settings of the drivers (they're ATI official), and the settings of the game, to no avail. There are no newer drivers availible. Is there a hack i can use to stretch his games?

I need some help because i feel like an asshole from promising to fix his computer, and then making it worse. Please /comp/, don't make me repost this in /g/ :(

Thanks in advance :3

you're an idiot for not backing up drivers for such an old machine.

good news is, a new one of those might run about $400 and can play all those great. so an old one will cost a negligible amount.
