Routing, etc. question

I have a Netgear wireless router/modem (a DG834G) in my mother's office, and from that I have a cable running under the house to my bedroom, where I have a crappy slow hub to connect my computer, xbox and other stuff to the network. my question is this: if I where to buy a web-safe router to replace the hub (something like an RP614) and connected the line from the main router/modem to the modem port of the new router, and then turned off all features on the new router such as DHCP and NAT and such ( or configured the DHCP to be a secondary to the main router), would I still be able to connect to the rest of the network through it? and the internet as well? or is that web port on the router only useable by proper modems as a direct connection to the internet?
