perhaps it's time for the open source community to move into hardware.
first project: open source video card
open source drivers, firmware, hardware specs, everything.
perhaps it would be easiest to start with some custom ramdac + ram, an x86 cpu and necessary bus logic, place it on a agp/pci-e card.
then when algorithms and hardware are developed they can move from a generic cpu to a more specialized gpu.
