Help with linux!

I want to install Linux. Is there a "best" distro?

I've tried twice to install Gentoo Linux as a dual-boot on my Windows system I'm using now. The first attempt on the same hard drive, the second attempt on a separate one, but both attempts failed and left me unable to boot into either OS. I was using the GRUB bootloader each time, because the Gentoo manual said I had to with an AMD system. Other people I know who installed Linux said that they just ran through the install process and I could try using lilo if I wanted, because it would work too, but I'm not sure.

Any suggestions?

Use a live CD.

Also, if you're having problems with it making your machine unbootable, you should tell the installer to keep the boot record in the superblock. That way if something fucks up it won't take windows with it.

Yepyep, I'm already using the Gentoo LiveCD. I'll try that, but I hope to get some more suggestions before I attempt this again tonight.. I'm going to back up all my information before hand in case I get locked out again.
