MKV files - subtitles arent displayed ;_;

So I finally finished downloading Azumanga Daioh. After some initial problems I got to run the japanese audio track (its not  a separate track but on the second channel of the english track or something and for some reason I could only make it play on mediaplayer). Problem is, none of my players display any subtitles, which sucks because I dont understand moonspeak.

this is what the accompanying info file says:

"Subtitles:    1xSRT from DVD subtitle track
        English subtitles

    The subtitles were processed by the subresync program; which also can  turn VOBsubs into SRT files; saving space while allowing Gordian Knot to mux them into the stream properly. Why GKnot cant take straight VOBsubs or something else that doesnt require me to OCR is beyond me."

Any ideas how I can make this work?

Subtitles look hideous in VLC. I'd recommend MPC or Mplayer..
