UNIX pipes

why does this work: firefox yotsuba.jpg
but not this: ls|grep yotsuba|firefox

note: ls|grep yotsuba produces: yotsuba.jpg

what am I doing wrong?

The second one pipes the stdin of firefox with the stdout of grep, while the first one runs firefox with the command line argument "jotsuba.jpg"
