Firefox cannot play Youtube videos correctly (whether directly on the site or on another site). Firefox would load the video (so that only the black screen shows) for five minutes, and then the video would play as normal. It can play flash videos off of any other site, but just not Youtube videos for some reason.
It does work perfectly in Opera, but it's annoying to open Opera when I just want to watch a video

So don't close Opera.

If you configure your Opera settings properly you can make it so it prompts you to either choose between opening saved sessions or just opening a blank page when you run Opera. It won't lag from a cold start either.
Is there an actual way to fix Firefox so that the videos will play?

Using Linux with Flash sites = LOL

Whenever a youtube video locks at the "loading..." black screen (I wonder if that's what you're talking about) with firefox, I try to play it with IE7 and the same happens, so I'd say it's not a browser problem.

No problems with anything except flash 8 here, which they have yet to release for Linux. You're doing it wrong.
