Fan eating CPU

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-20 9:22

I just bought a new computer and everything runs fine but I've been noticing that after the case fan gets to a certain temp the fan starts whirring at full blast and all of a sudden the System process goes up to almost 99 CPU usage. So my question if this, does a case fan use the CPU to sense the temperature in the case and thus eats it away? And if so, is there a way I can disable that function and just have the fan be a full blast all the time?

your motherboard should have a seperate sensor for the case temp, you can control them via your bios

sounds like you may have some form of virus.. either that or you're using some form of AMD cool 'n' quiet driver or some shit that's completley gone fuckaroo on you

try getting a cd bootable linux distro (i reccomend mandriva), see if it still does it (will save you the time of formatting etc)

i highly doubt its a hardware related problem, but it is possible

I suspect you're mixing up the cause and effect.  Are you absolutely certain that the higher fanspeed is causing the increase in CPU?  It's much more likely that the spike in CPU usage is causing the fan's RPMs to ramp up.

I you sure it's the fan causing high CPU, and not the other way around?

O shi... I should read the thread properly first.

I'm absolutely sure. The computer will run fine, then about 5-10 minutes later the fan will start spinning full speed and then about 30 seconds-1 minute later the CPU usage will hit max. And when I looked through the processes to see which one was the culprit it turned out to be SYSTEM so my assumption was that since the fan is part of the system, fan = 34tin' UR CPU L0L0L0

Opera is very light on system resources. It should use much less CPU!

You probably have some fan speed controlling software that has gone bad.
It might also be some stupid form of temperature regulation where the SYSTEM sends NOOP instructions to the cpu in order to lower the temperature.

But it would help if you could tell us what cpu you are using, if you know of any fan controlling software and what computer you are using.

I'm using an AMD Athlon 64 3400+. I installed kubuntu to see if it was just a windows problem and the performance is fine but whenever I check the CPU usage it still hovers at around 90%
