Sometimes, when I turn on my laptop, the fan starts blowing really hard, the sound is garbled, and everything runs much slower. It goes away when I turn the laptop off and on again. It's happened about half a dozen times so far, but it's doing it more frequently. What's going on?
I have a Dell Inspirion, if that matters.

sounds like a temperature problem to me. Best case scenario: you've got dust bunnies fucking up your computer, man. worst cases, you've got a malfunctioning fan or poorly applied heat glue(whatever it's called.)
if you don't wanna take out your computer just yet, download "speedfan" and it'll report your CPU temperature for you. anything above 50C means your compy's gonna die pretty soon.
Take it apart, down to the heatsink, and then shove a pressurized air can up that thing and blow the hell out of it.
When I did this, I got a dust bunny the size of my thumb. If you do this and temp doesn't improve, call Dell to replace some shit.
