Name: Anonymous 2006-12-25 14:07

I got about $130-ish +-20. to buy a video card.
my question. is what do i need. in an 8x AGP.  to run Half life 2. at >=60 fps.

(probably gonna get it at fry's)

I know I got a AGP 6800 just a little while ago and that runs nearly everything very smoothly.
Don't have HL2, but got CSS and I can run that on full with a min. of 60FPS

Yup that one rocks. I got a Leadtek (good brand, good heatsink) nVidia GeForce 6800 AGP (non-Ultra, sometimes called NU) with 128 MB VRAM a couple of years ago, when it was the fucking bomb. (Now it's still the fucking bomb except for VRAM for a few select games (Oblivion) for which I made a patch to play with nearly-high textures anyways, lurk around its boards.) What's great is you can very easily unlock its pipelines and overclock it to get a 6800 GT (faster core than the GT, slower memory, similar performance) for the price of a 6800 standard. Easy as fuck to do with RivaTuner, little to no risk involved, Leadtek's good fan and heatsink help a lot, the fan is still running at 40% of its maximum speed and it keeps it cool (by default, it's set to 25%).

Is that an average or a minimum? Which resolution, AA and options?

My overclocked Leadtek nVidia GeForce 6800 AGP (which performs like a 6800 GT) should run HL2 at 1024×768, no AA at an average of over 73 fps. The old GeForce FX 5800 seems to be just over the 60 fps average, but you shouldn't get a GeForce FX, it's old and has a more limited shader model.

Forgot to say, the 6600 GT does about the same, because in that benchmark setup the game was clearly not GPU-bound. But I recommend the 6800. You won't regret it, and you'll need it to play games such as Oblivion in high or medium-high detail.

If you aren't getting top 'o the line, which you sure as shit aren't for $150, go home.

do not get an AGP 6800. Do not do this thing. You will want a new computer and you will realize you cannot bring the video card with it, yet the video card will not yet be old. DO NOT DO THIS THING. A good video card should last you for a good long time. You will not be able to upgrade your pc in the future and still have an AGP slot

OP here.  i'm not planning on upgrading my computer for a LONG ASS TIME.  that said, i'm also not planning on spending enough cash that it will actually last as long as i'm planning to not upgrade it.

hell, two years ago, i was barely playing red alert 1 on an old toshiba with win 98, 64 mb of ram, and a 3 gig hard drive.  for the last two years, i got a newer computer, and been sloughing away at TFC and firearms at about 16-22 fps.

as it stands, being able to play this years games, and next years games isn't a giant deal.  i jsut want to play fortress forever or TF2 really badly.

provided my shit doesn't melt (it's running real hot for some reason), this pc is gonna last me until well after college (3.5 more years) until i get a decent job.  so provided it runs stuff up until this or last year great, i'm fine with it.
