Display problems

I do not know very much about computers. I am using a laptop. I recently formatted it, and it is running fine. Now though, everything is "flat" due to the fact that I can not get widescreen resolutions. At first I also had no sound because I did not have the audio drivers installed, so I found them on Dell's site (it is a Dell, xps m140). But I can not find anything helpful for fixing my display. Can someone tell me what I need to be looking for exactly?

Would you, by any chance have that copypasta that starts with something like "okay, listen up, i am going to stop trolling, and this only happens like once a week..."?
