if you have a cd burner, go download kubuntu live cd and boot from that
I can't access my hard drive. Will this still work? Loading from this CD program?

Kubuntu is a "live" Linux, meaning it will run from CD without the need for a harddisk installation.
With a bit of luck you only got a few bad sectors on your HD that trashed parts of XP's files. In that case, copy anything you still need off of the damaged HD using the live system booted from CD. If you're out of luck, the HD crapped out completely as in "head crash" and you can kiss your data good-bye.

I know of this problem. Fixing it is easy. In this situation, all you need to do is defraggle your motherdisc. Works every time.
