dedicated 4chan browser

Name: Anonymous 2006-12-01 7:34

I have come up with an idea for a web browser devoted specifically to lurking 4chan/other chans. Some ideas I had for it are:

*built in Overchan-like sidebar
*enhanced board navigation in general
*a few extensions for those who want them (not firefox compatible though)
*custom download manager which (optionally) could upload to other users (sort of like bittorrent)

These are only a few of my ideas of course, and other cool ideas are welcome. Basically, the purpose would be to have a custom browser for all the "power lurkers" that could also help with the bandwidth issue. I'm wondering, though, if people would actually be interested in using such a thing.

Which rendering engine will your browser use? Gecko or IE?

* enhanced board navigation in general
That's not an idea, that's at best a suggestion for what type of idea to come up with.

*a few extensions for those who want them (not firefox compatible though)
Same.

*custom download manager which (optionally) could upload to other users (sort of like bittorrent)
Such an extension exists.

*built in Overchan-like sidebar
Why? We have a sidebar

Also, enhanced borad navitagion already done, se 4chan extension.

I'm sorry, did I crush your idea? :(

Why would you need a rendering engine? All it needs to do is display images and text...

That's a rethoric question, isn't it?

Macfag here so you might not care what I say, but:

I made this suggestion for imageboard support in the forum for this proposed message board aggregator "Hijack". Not that your suggestions were very specific, but it seems to be along the lines of what you want.

I have no idea if this will actually be adopted, but regardless, I think a "fat client" app for 4chan and other imageboards would go down well. Apparently there's one for 2chan already. I don't necessarily think there should even be a standard HTML rendering engine, it should instead interpret the HTML (not too hard for 4chan) and generate a database that is displayed by the client in different ways. Things could be a lot more efficient, the Firefox toolbar doesn't quite cut it as a solution to this.

OP here.

A full-fledged rengering engine wouldn't be necessary, as 5 and 7 said, but if I had to choose I'd probably go with GtkHTML.

You miss the point entirely, but I'd still like to check out that download extension because I've never heard of it before. Anyway, don't be an asshole.

That Hijack thing is pretty cool, even though it isn't quite what I had in mind. It does seem to have some cool features, though. Too bad I don't have a Mac. :(

I've heard of the 2chan one before but I've never played around with it. I definately agree with the rest of what you said, and I'd be willing to work on this project if people would give me some ideas they would like, or at least convince me that people would actually use it.
