Mousepads

Are they good for anything anymore, if you have a smooth desk and a high quality optical mouse with no problems laser tracking? I can see getting one for lan parties, but is that it?

They're pretty well useless, unless you have a woodgrain desk. Optical Mouses don't get along w/ woodgrain desks. There was a war between them back in the 1700's, and they've hated each other every since. :)

I use a mousepad. I don't have a laser mouse but I know that my optical mouse just doesn't move around as well on the wooden desk, and occasionally it will jerk around.

Mousepads are also good for wrist rests, and can look pretty cool. I have a tan leather one.

I use a mousepad because my optical mouse dislikes the pattern on the surface my desk. There are plenty of surfaces around that optical mouses fail to operate correctly.
