So I was stupid and I downloaded porn off a free-site. And now I have pop-ups. What are "must have" programs? I'm thinking Ad-Aware, but someone tells me it doesn't work. What should I be torrenting to kill these pop-ups?

Spybot. Spywareblaster. That's really all you need.
For malware in general, a network layer firewall (NOT an application layer firewall), common sense, and an open source or TOTALLY free AV (the commercial ones, especially the Big Three, are bloated and bring in more trouble than they fix).
Also, Linux/Mac.

ad-aware and spybot work well, even together. hyjack this is good for when you suspect you have something but can't figure out if you do or not.

If you have little to no clue as to what you're doing, I'd make backups of all your precious files and/or porn and have your reformat discs ready... because you'll likely need it.
Nothing screws up your computer more than repair attempts by someone who doesn't know what they're doing.

my computer freezes every now and then for no reason. i just ran adware/spybot and spyware blaster and apart from low threat cookies i am apparently fine.
