Speeding up a computer

Name: Anonymous 2006-11-12 17:53

It's been awhile since I had to set up a comp, but recently I recieved an semi-new laptop from a friend who thought it was way too slow.

But since I'm out of practice I wanted to make sure my setup list was still up to date.

 Save all relevant information.
 Reformat
Install WindowsXP (I know, first mistake, blah blah blah Linux)
 Uninstall unnecessary Programs.
 Disable Services:
-Distributed Link Tracking
-Error Reporting Service (also turned off in system properties)
-Indexing Service (questionable if it helps file sort speed)

Name: Anonymous 2006-11-12 17:53

-Portable Media Serial Number Service
-Remote Desktop Help Session Manager (Also disabled in system properties)
-TCP/IP Netbios manager.
-Universal Plug and Play
 Run Regcleaner.
 Run X-setup and Tweakui.
 Restart.
 Install Hardware drivers.
 Install antivirus, Spybot and firewall.
 Restart.
 Update windows and antivirus/antispyware.
 Install software programs.
 Run Regcleaner and Easycleaner.
 Restart.

So that is the basic steps I followed to speed up his computer.  But I was wondering if there was anything more I could do before I start messing with the hardware settings with overclocking.  I'm also wondering what other services should be disabled or if I disabled the wrong ones already.

Get a rambooster program!

They will increase performance by actively monitoring your computer and dumping old ram during idle time to speed it up!

Then you can use that extra speed to make up for the loss of RAM reserved by the rambooster in the first place!

Seriously, don't trust a software program that runs in the background to speed up your computer.  Especially "overclock" programs.

is it a sempron or celeron. if so then its Low cache, no matter the tweaking or ram added its not gonna improve much.

Name: Anonymous 2006-11-12 22:46

that's assuming the cache is the bottleneck. computer performance is the sum of the all the bottlenecks in the system. if the bottleneck was caused by page file thrashing, the solution would be to get more memory. If the problem is a chuggy os, the solution may be to kill some non-essential tasks

so aside from bottlenecks, any problems with my steps so far?  This is the kind of stuff I did for my own computer a half year ago (except disabling more unneeded network services) so any improvements are welcome.

get rid of any norton or mcafee stuff

why in god's name would you try to overclock a laptop?

Maybe his friend is trying to game on the laptop.

I would recommend using CCleaner (short for crap cleaner or something).

It can uninstall programs that aren't shown in the add-remove programs, fix registry problems, remove unwanted startup programs, and it searches for malware and it get rid of cookies and stuff that other applications leave behind.

Maybe laptops can't cool their CPUs and should never be overclocked. Plus most laptops don't have a real graphics card.

No system tray bullshit. Everything you see in the system tray is bullshit. Everything resident is bullshit. Multimedia keyboards are multishit. Stupid mice extensions are shitty shit. You don't need a screensaver other than power off monitor. Launch bars are for faggots. Intel's wireless is a stinking piece of shit. No, icons in your system tray aren't cute and you can't leave them there.

P.S.: Did I tell you about how shitty shitty system tray shit is?

Yeah, it's up to date. Oh except you made a mistake:

>>Install WindowsXP

You'll need to install Linux to get the best preformance.
