NEW COMP?!

Name: Rajat Suri 2006-11-05 22:41

Hey guys. My parents said I could buy a new computer, and I don't know where to go. I want something for gaming, preferably below 2000$. My friends recommend Dell, but is there a cheaper or better option?

Your friends are idiots.

build a decent one for 1000, then keep any extra money.

Your friends are indeed idiots, if they're suggesting Dell.

Shit, if I had $2000 to blow, I'd get a MacBook ( but I'd put Linux on it :p ).

Anyways, what are you going to do with it?  Unless you're a super hardcore gamer, you won't need more than $800.

1. look at the reccomended System Requirements for the games you want to play as a starting point.

2. Use alienware desktop game rigs Specs as a guide of what you may want to for your pc (IE. videcard, mother board..ect) and then shop around. newegg.com

Calm down dude.

Anywho, you might want to wait a bit until Vista comes out unless you get your comp at one of those places that gives you a free upgrade.

Check sites like Arstechnica, hardocp, tomshardware do lots of reviews of hardware. Expect lots of malicious advice from Channers when asking a question like this, because we get asked "I NEED COMPUTAR FOR LESS THAN XXX$ PLZ" Like every 5 minutes.
Go on newegg and read reviews. (Newegg reveiws acn't always be trusted, ie, you'll still find plenty of people singing the praises of ancient Durons and Radeon 9200's even in the year 2006.) In general, you get what you pay for.
2000$ Will get you a very nice gaming machine that will last a while.
If you'll want to upgrade any time in the future, you'll want AM2 for AMD 939 if you don't, and LGA 775 for Intel regardless. You want a good motherboard, like an Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, ASRock, or Abit. Check with your motherboard wot see what type of RAM to get. Corsair is usually a good bet. OCz and Mushkin are also quality. Get AT LEAST 1GB. Make sure it will run dual channel on your motherboard. Higher frequency is better. Lower latency is better. Don't skimp on the PSU, you'll want an Antec, OCz, EPOWER/Tagan, Silvetstone or PC P&C (depending on budget).
For gaming, you want a decent graphics card. If you'll be playing a lot of OGL games, go nvidia, for DX, go ATI. If you'll be gaming in Linux, go Nvidia. If you need low-power useage, go with a newer Nvidia. If you just need something cheap but powerful, an old X8X0 series card does well. For a gaming machine in your budget I'd probably just go with a 7900GT or X1800. Processors, C2D is on top. Working with a budget like yours, I'd go with an E6600. If you want to gamble on the potential succes of K8L, you could get a nice AM2 board and either a 3500+ to get you by, or spend a little more and get a 1210 Santa Ana. That's about it. Your HDD should have at least an 8mb cache. 16 is not too expensive for you. Look around to see who is putting out reliable batches at the moment. LiteOn and Phillips are good DVD burners. Sonys are just rebranded LiteOns. So are Pacific Digital if you run into one. LiteOns can be firmware hacked to become region-free at the hardware level.
