near-dead HD, prolong its' life?

    My hard drive is making some nasty sounds and I've read that noises are a bad sign for hard drives.  I can' get another Hard drive for about a month.  So i'm wondering what I could do to prolong the life of my current hard drive (besides NOT using my computer obviously, but I don't have a choice). 

   Would clearing up space and defragmenting have any benefits for the next month or would it do more harm?  What else could I do to extend the life of my near-dead HD?

It sounds like your hard drive is pretty close to dying.  You shouldn't push your luck.  Make sure your data is backed up.  Maybe you can get an old hard drive off of a friend and use that.  You could also consider taking the hard drive out and just using an Ubuntu boot CD.

1. Go to wal-mart
2. Buy computer on credit card
3. Disassemble computer
4. Remove hard drive from computer
5. Reassemble computer
6. Return it, say "I'M BLACK AND I CAN'T FIGGA DIS SHIT OWT"
7. ??????
8. Profit.
9. Enjoy your shitty OEM hard drive that will die in 6 months.

If it does die, put in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer for a while. Chances it will work for a little while its cold (maybe for a few hours, not like a fucking month)

Buy a new hard drive. They are cheap as shit for a smaller one.

You can really have some good times with your computer. You seriously should learn to fix it yourself. Nobody cares about how it runs but you. If you take it to some jackhole and tell him to fix it, it's not going to get done right. Even if you have a father/brother/boyfriend/whatever that you LIVE with who is a Lunix tard and fixes computers for a living, he can't fix it like you can. Even if you're mediocre at best dealing with hardware. Only you use it enough to make a true diagnosis of your computer's health.

Ive got several (almost dead 4gb drives) i got all my data from them by freezing them when they died and transfering everything over to a new drive.

Just get a new drive (theyre fucking cheap nowadays) copy over all the shit you need and use the platters from the old drive as amusing coasters.
