Does wine work or do I need cedega or there's no chance?

What're the technical differences between Cedega and Wine now anyway?  Once upon a time, back when Cedega was called "WineX", it was the only version that emulated DirectX to any useful extent, but apparently nowadays Wine can play WoW...

Is Cedega just Wine with an idiot-proof GUI frontend and preset configurations for popular games?
